Just before 2 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2026, a fire broke out in the shacks in Zagreb's Borovje neighborhood. The dilapidated structures, located right on the Sava embankment, about a hundred meters from the Youth Bridge, were quickly engulfed in flames.
The Zagreb Fire Department (JVP Zagreb) received multiple reports from residents who noticed smoke and fire. Three fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, and the fire was quickly brought under control.
During the operation, firefighters rescued one person who had attempted to re-enter the burning shack. "We rescued a person who tried to go back inside to retrieve some belongings. During reconnaissance, a firefighter spotted them and pulled them out," said Mario Fabijanić, shift commander at JVP Zagreb.
"About 80 percent of the area was affected, there were many calls, and we'll manage to resolve this in a moment," Fabijanić added.
Thanks to the quick intervention, the fire did not spread to nearby structures or beyond the shack area on the Sava embankment. An investigation will determine the cause of the fire.
