On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in the early afternoon hours, a fire broke out at the Legrad Recycling Yard. The flames engulfed the control cabin, i.e., the administrative container, but thanks to the fire alarm system and the firefighters' lightning-fast response, it was quickly brought under control, preventing further spread to the rest of the facility and equipment.

Numerous Firefighting Forces Deployed

Upon the alarm, firefighting units from several settlements were immediately dispatched to the scene. Members of the Legrad Volunteer Fire Department (DVD), Đelekovec DVD, Mali Otok DVD, and Selnica Podravska DVD took part in extinguishing the fire. As reinforcement, the Koprivnica Public Fire Brigade also arrived at the scene.

The municipal administration issued a public thank-you to all participants in the operation. "We sincerely thank all firefighters who, with their swift and professional actions [...]," reads their statement.

Cause of the Fire and Estimated Damage

The Mayor of Legrad Municipality, Ivan Sabolić, confirmed the initial information about the cause of the fire. According to him, the problem arose in an electrical cabinet that overheated. "The problem originated in the electrical cabinet, and details will be known after the investigation and determination of all circumstances," Sabolić stated.

Material damage is currently estimated at approximately 5,000 euros. The mayor emphasized that the swift intervention was crucial in preventing significantly greater consequences. "Let us recall, for the same reason, the locker rooms at Graničar once caught fire. Thank God we had the alarm and reacted quickly. The damage is estimated at around 5,000 euros, and had it not been for the swift intervention, it would have been several times higher," Sabolić said.

Investigation Underway
