Milorad Pupovac, Member of Parliament, President of the SDSS, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, strongly condemned on Friday the events that took place in Knin during the commemoration of August 5, 2026. At an extraordinary press conference on August 7, Pupovac described the incidents involving hate messages and calls for violence as horrifying and dangerous to the foundations of society.

"This Is a Vicious Attack on Democracy"

Pupovac did not hide his disgust at what happened in Knin. "What we heard in Knin is horrifying," he stated. He emphasized that the chanting of controversial slogans and the behavior of certain groups undermine the true values of society and sent a sharp message to those who try to portray such acts in a positive light.

"Those who have been trying to smuggle this in as an act of patriotism for years are seriously undermining true patriotism. Those who think this is democracy and turn a blind eye are mistaken; this is a vicious attack on democracy," Pupovac said, as reported by Totalinfo.hr. He asserted that this is "false patriotism and a danger to democracy."

Criticism of DORH and the Judiciary

In his address, the SDSS leader specifically focused on what he described as the lack of response from the competent institutions. He called out the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia (DORH) and the courts, claiming they are not fulfilling their duty.

"Many whose duty is to protect the constitutional order are not taking the actions they should. Some of the people from the parade and gatherings have previously been acquitted of responsibility," Pupovac said, alluding to earlier acquittals that, in his words, encourage the repetition of such incidents. He expressed deep concern over the hate messages that, as he stated, "echoed loudly through Knin without any reaction from politics or the media."
