Work on the first section of the future Varaždin-Krapina expressway is proceeding according to the planned schedule, as confirmed on Monday, August 4, 2026, during a site visit. The Varaždin-Cerje Tužno section, approximately 7.5 kilometers long, is in full swing, with completion expected within 36 months of the start of construction.

The site was visited by Varaždin County Prefect Anđelko Stričak, Deputy Prefect Silvija Zagorec, Member of Parliament Goran Kaniški, Croatian Roads Board Member Alen Leverić, County Councilor Zdenko Đuras, and representatives of local government, the County Road Administration, the contractor, and supervision.

First Section Already Staked Out Along Its Entire Length

The contracted value of works on the first section amounts to €25.47 million excluding VAT. Prefect Stričak noted that this was the third site visit and that the route has already been staked out along its entire length.

"The construction of the first section is planned to take three years, and we can already see that work is progressing very well. Today we can confirm that the route of the first section, Varaždin-Cerje Tužno, is practically staked out along its entire length. This area is almost entirely populated, which is why the new route will be of exceptional importance. Besides being shorter, it will redirect traffic away from densely populated areas," said Prefect Stričak.

He added that the new road will bring safer, faster, and more fluid traffic for the entire region.

Croatian Roads Board Member Alen Leverić emphasized that all deadlines are being met and that there is no talk of abandoning the project. "The entire expressway project is worth around €315 million, and all deadlines from the start of documentation preparation to construction have been met. Everything we agreed upon with Prefect Anđelko Stričak will be carried out," Leverić stated.

The entire project is expected to be completed by 2028. County Councilor Zdenko Đuras highlighted that the new road will increase safety, redirect freight traffic away from settlements, and contribute to the economic and tourism development of the towns of Ivanec and Lepoglava and the wider area.

The Varaždin-Krapina expressway is a strategic infrastructure project passing through Varaždin and Krapina-Zagorje counties, with the first section from Varaždin to Cerje Tužno under construction since late April 2025.
