On this day exactly 31 years ago, August 6, 1995, Slunj and Rastoke welcomed freedom. It was the third day of the military-police operation Storm, and the picturesque settlement known for its waterfalls, old mills, and houses built above the water was then completely destroyed and devastated.
Today, three decades later, the scenes are completely different. The traces of destruction have been replaced by restored wooden houses, waterfalls, walking paths, restaurants, and accommodation facilities. Rastoke has once again become one of the most recognizable excursion spots in continental Croatia, a place where natural beauty merges with traditional architecture and a centuries-old way of life by the water.
After the return of the residents, a long-term reconstruction followed, which restored the old splendor to this settlement and turned it into a tourist attraction that draws visitors from across the country and abroad. Photographs captured by photographer Kristina Stedul Fabac bear witness to the current appearance of Rastoke, which resembles scenes from a fairytale.
Today, Rastoke is not just a tourist destination but also a symbol of resilience and renewal. The settlement that just a few decades ago was a heavily destroyed and ravaged place now tells a story of the return of life and the preservation of tradition along the Slunjčica River, which cascades into the Korana River.
