Real Madrid announced on Thursday via its official channels a piece of news that sent shockwaves through the football world. Nineteen-year-old defender Yan Diomandé is the new player for the Royal Club, putting an end to one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of this summer. The youngster from RB Leipzig arrives in Madrid for a fee of €125 million, with an additional €15 million in bonuses, and has signed a seven-year contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2033.
Beyond the transfer itself, this story also brings the resolution of a heated conflict between two of the world's leading insiders, Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg. Their public war of words over this deal lasted for days and culminated in July.
German Plettenberg openly questioned Romano's credibility after the Italian published his famous "Here we go." According to Plettenberg, at that moment, an agreement between the clubs did not actually exist. He laid out his claims in a lengthy post on X. "The fact is this: that agreement still does not exist. This is still confirmed by RB Leipzig, Real Madrid, and the player's camp. If a €100 million offer was rejected, it's pretty obvious that the final figure will be well above €100 million, right?" Plettenberg wrote.
Romano's response came quickly, on July 26, 2026, and left no room for doubt. "Don't worry, Diomandé is going to Real Madrid just like Klopp went to Germany," the insider said, adding his own accusations against his colleague. He claimed that Plettenberg had spread false news about a Man City offer and that the club had dropped out of the race for the player much earlier.
The debate quickly escalated and took on personal tones. Plettenberg warned Romano that he had "crossed the line" with accusations of fake news, and also commented on his reporting of Jürgen Klopp's appointment as Germany's head coach, calling it "simply disrespectful to every journalist who actually does real journalistic work." On the other hand, Romano threatened to release old private messages in which Plettenberg, according to him, begged for advice on how to increase his follower count on social media. "Maybe I should share messages from a few years ago where you asked me 'how can I increase my followers' or 'your job is my motivation'..." Romano wrote.
In the final phase of the dispute, Plettenberg himself eventually admitted what the Italian had claimed from day one. "Everyone should ask themselves on what basis they report on agreements... Yan Diomandé will move to Real Madrid. DONE SOON. Good night," the German wrote.
The official confirmation of the transfer on August 6, 2026 proved that Romano had accurate information all along. From the very beginning, he insisted that Diomandé was definitely going to Real Madrid, which ultimately came to fruition, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable sources in the football market.
