The Ministry of Demographics and Immigration has secured 700 scholarships-200 more than last year-for learning the Croatian language in the academic year 2026/2027, and on Wednesday, the ranking list with the names of 386 candidates who received them was published. The public call, issued back in June 2026, was open to Croatian emigrants, their descendants, and spouses who are of legal age and have completed secondary education. Of the total number of scholarships, 335 are intended for the winter semester and 365 for the summer semester.

Five Continents in Pursuit of Croatian

Candidates come from as many as 24 countries, but Argentina leads convincingly, accounting for nearly a quarter of all scholarships. It is followed by Chile with over 70 awarded places, Peru with more than 45, Bolivia with 37, and the United States with 27 scholarship recipients. About ten candidates come from Venezuela, Brazil, and New Zealand, and about fifteen from Ecuador.

The list also reveals some more exotic destinations-two scholarship recipients each come from the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom, while candidates from the Philippines, Israel, Morocco, Libya, and France each received one place.

Zagreb Dominates Interest, Pula at the Bottom

Courses will be held at the faculties of humanities and social sciences in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, and Pula, as well as at the University of Zadar, and nearly half of all scholarship recipients chose Zagreb. On the other hand, only about fifteen candidates opted for Pula-the fewest among all offered cities.

The winter semester runs from October 2026 to the end of January 2027, while the summer semester starts in early March and ends in mid-June 2027.

400 Euros Monthly and a Race for Accommodation

The scholarship covers the cost of the course, subsidized meals, and a monthly accommodation allowance of 400 euros, which is paid to all who successfully complete the enrolled semester-regardless of whether they choose a student dormitory or private accommodation. However, dormitory spots are limited and are allocated by the Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth, or the relevant Student Center.

Preference for dormitory accommodation is given to candidates with a higher number of points who are no older than 33 years. The proposed ranking list has been published on the Ministry's website, and candidates can file objections within eight days-after which the list becomes final.
