The fire broke out yesterday afternoon in Podsusedska Alley, and the flames spread from the barbecue to the entire family home.
An unusual fire broke out yesterday, August 3, 2026, in Zagreb's Susedgrad neighborhood when a 44-year-old man decided to use a barbecue in the garage of a family home. The open flame spread rapidly, first engulfing the garage and then the residential part of the building in Podsusedska Alley.
According to the Zagreb police, the fire broke out around 1:40 PM. At the time of the outbreak, a 77-year-old woman and a 79-year-old man were inside the house. The older man sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment at the Clinic for Traumatology.
Firefighters immediately arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading further. The police confirmed that an investigation will follow to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, but preliminary findings point to negligence in using a barbecue in an enclosed space.
This incident serves as a stark warning about the dangers of grilling in garages and other enclosed areas, where open flames combined with flammable materials can quickly lead to disaster.
