Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the activation of air defense, while a house collapsed in the Holosiivskyi district and an ammonia leak occurred. New attacks with civilian casualties are being reported across Ukraine and Russia.
Russian forces carried out a massive ballistic attack on Kyiv on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, firing approximately 30 missiles at the Ukrainian capital. The Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA) stated that "Russian occupation forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv using ballistic weapons, and several explosions were heard in the city," as reported by Ukrainska Pravda.
"An air raid alert has been declared in Kyiv due to the threat of the enemy using ballistic weapons," the KCMA statement added. According to reports, at least six powerful explosions echoed across the city, while Shahed jet-powered drones were also active over Ukraine.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the air defense system is operational. "Air defense forces are operating in the capital and the surrounding region. More missiles are heading toward the city," Klitschko wrote, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda.
Fires broke out in non-residential buildings in the Kyiv-Sviatoshynskyi district, the mayor confirmed. In the Holosiivskyi district, a private residential house was destroyed, and Klitschko warned that people may be trapped under the rubble. In the same district, an ammonia leak occurred following a strike on a non-residential facility.
Russian forces also struck the area of the regional children's hospital in Zaporizhzhia. The attack damaged the hospital's facade and shattered windows, but there were no casualties. Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration Ivan Fedorov reported that the attack was carried out by a Russian Molniya drone. "Fortunately, when the air raid alert was announced, all children and medical staff were in shelters. There were no casualties," Fedorov said, as reported by Ukrinform.
At least eight civilians, including two Ukrainian girls, were killed in new cross-border bombardments, a day after the massacre on a Russian beach on the Black Sea. In Sumy, Russian guided bombs killed a woman and two girls aged 5 and 10. In Mykolaiv, an 89-year-old woman died.
Meanwhile, a drone attack on an industrial zone in the Moscow region killed five people and wounded six others, according to Governor Andrei Vorobyov. "Several fires broke out in the industrial zone of Novoselky," Vorobyov said. Ukrainian drones also targeted logistics facilities of the Wildberries company in Krasny Bor and Emmaus. In the Luhansk region, two civilians were killed and four wounded in Ukrainian attacks, according to Leonid Pasechnik, the head of the so-called Luhansk People's Republic.
Near Sevastopol in Crimea, a Russian soldier opened fire on his comrades and then on civilians, killing four people and wounding four others. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
Turkey reported that two of its boats, which had sailed from the Russian port of Novorossiysk, were attacked by drones, injuring some crew members, including Turkish nationals. "We are seriously concerned about the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, which is also affecting civilian vessels, despite all our warnings," the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The death toll from yesterday's Ukrainian drone attack on a beach in Gelendzhik has risen to eight, with 58 wounded. Among the victims are four children, said Russian Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, adding that three children remain hospitalized. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a phone call with Brazilian President Lula da Silva, "expressed gratitude to his Brazilian counterpart for his desire to contribute to finding a political and diplomatic solution to the conflict," the press service of the Russian presidential administration reported.
