On Monday, August 4, 2026, Sevastopol on the annexed Crimean peninsula was shaken by two serious security incidents. A Russian soldier killed four people, including three civilians, while in a separate operation, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested two men suspected of preparing terrorist attacks on the orders of Ukraine's military intelligence (GUR).
According to information from the Telegram channel AMK Mapping, the same day also saw a possible launch of a supersonic cruise missile Oniks from the Crimean area, further illustrating the tense security situation on this strategic peninsula in the Black Sea.
Details of the shooting were first published on his Telegram channel by Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-appointed governor of the Sevastopol region. According to him, the tragedy unfolded in two stages. "According to preliminary information, the soldier opened fire on his comrades, killing one person, and then attacked civilians, killing three of them," Razvozhayev wrote. One more person was wounded in the attack on his comrades.
The governor confirmed that the attacker has been detained and that the motives are currently completely unknown. "All circumstances and causes of the incident are being established," Razvozhayev announced on Telegram, appealing to citizens to remain calm and not spread unverified information. He also released the identities of the civilian victims: two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64-year-old woman.
In a separate operation, the FSB arrested two Russian citizens in Sevastopol. According to the Russian insider channel Rybar, they were preparing a series of terrorist attacks on the orders of Ukraine's military intelligence. The detainees were gathering data on Russian military facilities and air defense positions, and were planning attacks on critical infrastructure and one of the leaders of the new Russian regions. Three FPV drones with warheads, an improvised explosive device, and other materials for preparing attacks were found and seized from them.
Rybar, which presents itself as a Russian insider channel, describes this operation as a typical pattern of Ukrainian special services, which recruit perpetrators among Russian citizens via social media for sabotage and assassinations.
Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, has been a target of Ukrainian attacks for months, aimed at disrupting Russian logistics in southern Ukraine. Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has regularly used the peninsula for its military operations. These latest incidents point to growing instability in the region, where internal security challenges, such as the shooting and attempted terrorist attacks, intertwine with active military operations, including indications of a possible missile launch.
