Dinamo's footballers left no doubt on Tuesday evening in Zagreb. In the third qualifying round of the Champions League, they dismantled Lithuanian side Kauno Žalgiris with a resounding 5:0, practically booking their place in the play-off after just the first leg, where Norwegian side Viking awaits.
The team led by coach Marijo Kovačević set a pace from the first minute that the visitors simply couldn't match. The statistics best illustrate the balance of power on the pitch: Dinamo had as much as 70 percent possession, fired 20 shots with nine on target, while Kauno Žalgiris failed to register a single shot on goal in all 90 minutes. Their only threat came from a long-range effort that struck the woodwork.
The Lithuanians, despite being champions of their country and currently sitting second in their domestic league, just a point behind the leaders with two games in hand, simply had no answer to the Zagreb machine.
What makes this victory special is a statistic that reveals the true magnitude of the result. Out of a total of 64 Champions League qualifying matches played this summer, only three clubs have managed to win by a five-goal margin. Alongside Dinamo, only Red Star Belgrade, who beat Northern Ireland's Larne 5:0, and Albania's Egnatia, who defeated Moldova's Petrocub 6:1, have achieved this.
However, the key difference is that both of those matches were played in earlier stages of the competition, in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively, where opponents are considerably weaker. In the third qualifying round, Dinamo was the only club to secure such a convincing victory. All other matches in that stage ended in draws or narrow one-goal wins.
"Club historians say this is the seventh time the Blues have sent an opponent packing with a five-goal margin in European club competitions," Dinamo's official Twitter profile announced, alongside a photo of Luka Stanzl.
This isn't the first time Dinamo has shown such dominance in European qualifiers. UEFA itself once dubbed them the "Real Madrid of European qualifiers," and performances like this only reinforce that reputation.
Credit must also go to Kovačević's side for their approach. Matches where you're the overwhelming favorite can be tricky, but Dinamo took the task with utmost seriousness and completed the job routinely, avoiding any drama ahead of the return leg in Lithuania.
