Village of Breza near Bjelovar Gets Fiber Optic Network with Speeds up to 1 Gbit/s

The village of Breza near Bjelovar has become part of an extensive fiber optic network construction project that provides rural areas with internet access speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. Vladimir Fadljević from Breza was among the first to be ceremonially connected to the new infrastructure, bringing a ten-fold increase in speed compared to the previous 100 Mbit/s.
The fiber optic network construction project is worth 14.3 million euros and covers the city of Bjelovar and seven surrounding municipalities in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. The initiative was launched by the county led by County Prefect Marko Marušić, with Croatian Telecom participating as a technical partner in the implementation.
The new fiber optic infrastructure enables village residents to use advanced technologies that were previously available mainly in urban centers. Fadljević, as one of the first users, is already using high-speed internet for a surveillance camera system in his yard, demonstrating the practical possibilities that the new technology brings.
Rural areas of Croatia have long lagged behind in digital infrastructure, which has limited the development opportunities of local communities and the quality of life for residents. This project represents a significant step toward reducing digital inequality between urban and rural areas.
High-speed internet creates prerequisites for new forms of work, education, and business in rural areas. Residents now have the opportunity to work from home, access online education, and use digital services that require a stable and fast internet connection.
The project also opens opportunities for the development of digital entrepreneurship and tourism in rural areas of Bjelovar-Bilogora County, enabling local communities to leverage the benefits of digitalization for economic development.
