Marko Perković Thompson returns to Šibenik tonight after more than a decade with a major concert at Šubićevac Stadium. On this occasion, the portal ŠibenikIN released footage showing what many chroniclers and participants in wartime events consider the first public performance of the song 'Bojna Čavoglave'.
It was 1991 at Šibenik's Poljana. At the time, a virtually unknown veteran from Čavoglave, dressed in camouflage and carrying a guitar, performed the composition that would later become a symbol of resistance. There was no grand stage, no lighting, or concert production as we know it today.
Although 'Bojna Čavoglave' was first officially broadcast on Croatian Radio Split on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1991, many consider the performance at Šibenik's Poljana to be its first public concert rendition. Due to a lack of official records and the passage of time, there are different interpretations of the exact date, but the significance of that performance in a city under constant threat of attack remains deeply etched in collective memory.
The last time Thompson performed in Šibenik was in 2013 at a humanitarian concert for the construction of the Catholic Student Dormitory. Tonight, after 13 years, he returns to the city, this time to Šubićevac Stadium, where he will sing before thousands of fans ahead of the Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day celebrations.
