After just six days in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed the magical $1 billion mark at the global box office. This makes it the second-fastest film in history to achieve the feat, right behind Avengers: Endgame from 2019, which earned a record-breaking $1.2 billion in its opening weekend.
The latest installment in the Spider-Man saga, co-produced by Sony and Marvel, has exceeded all expectations. Its success is attributed to strong word-of-mouth, positive reviews, and a more grounded, character-driven adventure that doesn't require prior knowledge of the multiverse. A major draw is also the real-life couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, who are increasingly becoming the most bankable stars of today.
Their combined summer is impressive: with The Odyssey and Brand New Day, they currently hold a total gross of $1.8 billion. That number is set to grow as The Odyssey opens in South Korea today, August 5, 2026, followed by China (August 14) and Japan (September 11).
Brand New Day is the fourth film in 2026 to cross the $1 billion threshold. It follows The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.012 billion), Michael ($1.016 billion), and Toy Story 5 ($1.068 billion). The Odyssey has so far earned $912 million and is on track to become the fifth member of this exclusive club.
There is a strong likelihood that Brand New Day will surpass all of the aforementioned films and reach $2 billion in earnings, a feat achieved by only seven films in history. In December, Zendaya is also set to star in Dune: Part Three, directed by Denis Villeneuve, which is projected to earn around $800 million.
"Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who took over the reins from regular director Jon Watts, does an excellent job of committing to resetting the character's comic-book roots, making the roles believable and ensuring that emotion accompanies the spectacle," reads the Euronews Culture review.
The film's success is good news for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ahead of the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, which may hit theaters in December. That film is considered a pivotal moment for the studio after a string of box-office disappointments and lukewarm reviews over the past five years.
Euronews Culture notes in its review: "Despite its flaws and not being the slam-dunk the MCU desperately needs, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is buoyed by consistently strong action sequences and an excellent performance from Holland, who can now safely be crowned as the greatest Spider-Man on screen. All four of his solo outings prove how much Marvel needs him in its roster of heroes."
