The logo for the exhibition "Islands and Saints," presented at the Archaeological Museum in Split during 2025, has won the prestigious international Red Dot Design Award. The news was announced on Saturday, August 1, 2026, by the Archaeological Museum in Split and was reported by HRT Magazine and Večernji list.

The author of the award-winning visual identity is Croatian designer Stjepko Rošin. His solution was judged by an international panel of experts as an example of exceptional design quality, creativity, and top-tier execution, bringing significant international recognition to Croatian design.

Beneventana as Inspiration

The starting point for the logo was the cultural heritage of the early Middle Ages, specifically Beneventana, a calligraphic script that developed in southern Italy from the eighth century. On the eastern Adriatic coast, this script maintained its longest continuity outside the Apennine Peninsula.

In an era marked by illiteracy and conflict, Benedictine monasteries on offshore islands were the main strongholds of literacy, knowledge, and cultural exchange. Through an interpretation of the characteristic forms and ligatures of Beneventana, the graphic logo depicts a solitary island monastery with its reflection in the sea. The visual identity was developed through as many as twelve logo variations.

International Monacorale Project

The exhibition "Islands and Saints" presented to the public the results of the international research project Monacorale, dedicated to exploring the early medieval monastic heritage of the Adriatic islands. It was created through collaboration among several esteemed institutions.

In addition to the Archaeological Museum in Split, the project involved the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split, the French National Research Agency (ANR), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French School in Rome, and several French research units.
