Petar Sučić, the 22-year-old Croatian international footballer, has urgently left Inter Milan's training camp in Perth, Australia, and flown back to Milan. The reason is the best possible one - his wife Matea Rak is expected to give birth to their first child, a son, at any moment.
As Sportske novosti has learned, Sučić was expected to be in contention for the squad in the city derby against Milan, which ultimately ended 1:1. However, just before the match, he received news that Matea had gone into labor and was heading to the hospital. The club immediately arranged his return, and he boarded the first flight to Europe, thus missing the clash with their old rivals.
Sučić revealed to the world that he would become a father in the most beautiful way possible during the World Cup. After scoring a goal against Ghana, he celebrated by placing the ball under his jersey and putting his thumb in his mouth, mimicking a pacifier. It was a clear message that the family was expecting a new arrival.
The couple married in January 2026 on the romantic Lake Como in Italy. Matea, originally from Šibenik, and Petar met in Zagreb while she was studying at the University of Applied Health Sciences and he was wearing the Dinamo jersey.
Due to his World Cup appearances and the subsequent rest, Sučić hasn't yet fully completed the preseason process with the team. Despite knowing that the due date was near, the club's decision was for him to travel with the squad to Australia, where he mostly did running drills before urgently returning to Milan.
During the summer, there were reports of interest from several clubs in the young Vatreni. English clubs Newcastle and Leeds United were particularly mentioned, but Inter made it clear that Sučić was not for sale. His early return from Australia will not affect his status in the team led by coach Christian Chivu. Moreover, the fact that he becomes a father at 22 should only serve as extra motivation in his career.
