The municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje has declared Thursday, August 6, 2026, a Day of Mourning. The decision was made following a tragic house fire that occurred on Saturday, August 2, in which three people lost their lives.
The decision was made by Municipal Mayor Marko Kos. As announced, the Day of Mourning will be marked by lowering flags to half-mast on the municipal building and all other buildings for which the municipality is the founder. No entertainment programs or events will be held on that day.
Appeal to hospitality businesses
The municipality has also issued a special appeal to all legal and natural persons engaged in hospitality activities. They have been asked to adjust their operations and programs to reflect the spirit of the Day of Mourning.
Investigation progress
The tragedy occurred on Saturday when, after extinguishing a fire in a family home in Sveti Križ Začretje, the bodies of a 46-year-old man and two minor children were found. The on-site investigation determined that the fire had been set at multiple locations within the house.
All circumstances surrounding this tragic event continue to be investigated by the Zagreb County State Attorney's Office and the police. Specific results of the autopsies and further information about the course of the investigation are still pending.
