A series of powerful explosions and thick black smoke engulfed the industrial zone and port of Jebel Ali in Dubai in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, 2026. While UAE authorities describe the incident as an industrial accident, Iranian and other media outlets close to the so-called "axis of resistance" claim it was a missile or drone attack from Yemen, for which they blame the Houthis.
According to a report by Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency, citing Emirati officials, at least seven explosions were heard within just 20 minutes. Iran's state-run Press TV also carried the news, citing local sources. Video footage that quickly spread on social media shows large clouds of thick black smoke rising near a residential area.
Residents of the nearby Al Furjan neighborhood told AOL News they heard "at least four or five" loud explosions. Meanwhile, according to the Hindustan Times, two individuals were reportedly arrested for filming the incident, further deepening the mystery surrounding what happened. Official UAE authorities have so far not confirmed whether the cause was an attack or an accident.
The cause of the explosions has become a subject of conflicting reports. On one hand, as reported by Clash Report, UAE authorities frame the event as an industrial accident. On the other hand, Iranian media attribute the explosions to a missile or drone attack by Houthi rebels from Yemen. Some Iraqi media outlets also claim the explosions were the result of a missile attack from Yemen.
Adding another dimension is a NASA thermal report cited by Mehr Agency, which suggests that a fire broke out in a warehouse adjacent to the port that was used for fuel storage and transfer. An official statement from the Houthi military spokesperson is also expected, with the Telegram channel Abu Ali Express confirming a link between the explosions and a possible attack.
Jebel Ali, located in the southwest of Dubai, is one of the region's key industrial, commercial, and logistics hubs. The area encompasses the Jebel Ali Port and the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza), established in 1985, which is home to more than 11,000 companies from over 150 countries. With direct connections to major highways and Al Maktoum International Airport, this zone is vital to global trade.
The UAE has been on high alert since the outbreak of war in West Asia. Iran has previously targeted US allies in the region with retaliatory strikes. So far, there are no reports of casualties or the extent of damage.
