From Tape Measures to Digital Replicas
In the past, crime scene reconstruction relied heavily on photographs, sketches, and manual measurements, leaving room for human error and oversight. Today, 3D laser scanning enables the creation of a digital replica of the entire scene within hours. This technology captures millions of data points, generating a "point cloud" that allows experts to precisely measure distances, angles, and positions of every object and trace, even months after the physical scene has been restored to its original state.
Drones have also become an indispensable part of the equipment, especially when investigating larger areas such as traffic accidents, fires, or searches in difficult-to-access terrain. They enable rapid aerial imaging and the creation of detailed orthophoto maps that provide a broader perspective of the event and help understand the sequence of events.
Key Role in Complex Cases
According to the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA), a crime scene investigation must be conducted without delay to prevent the destruction or alteration of evidence. In more complex cases, in addition to police crime scene investigators, state attorneys from the County State Attorney's Office and specialized experts-from ballisticians and traffic specialists to medical forensic experts-are deployed to the field. The official report of the investigation, which details the course of the procedure, the evidence found, and statements from those present, remains a document of utmost importance, and it now increasingly includes high-precision digital data.
This technological evolution not only increases the accuracy and objectivity of collected evidence but also makes it more compelling in court. Digital 3D reconstructions can be used to create animations that vividly illustrate the dynamics of an event to judges and juries, whether it involves a traffic accident, homicide, or fire. Ultimately, the combination of traditional forensic expertise and modern technology is crucial for solving even the most complex incidents and ensuring that perpetrators do not go unpunished.
