Tim Cook, who steps down as Apple's CEO in a month, hinted during his final earnings call on July 30, 2026, that the company is considering pricing models for its new AI-powered Siri assistant. According to Gizmodo's report, Cook emphasized that Siri AI embodies Apple's philosophy but also noted that heavy usage comes with costs that users might eventually feel.
"We'll see what Siri AI brings from a cost perspective. There's also the possibility that heavy users might upgrade to a higher iCloud tier. What the balance will be is currently a bit uncertain," Cook said, as reported by Gizmodo. Apple has already announced that certain AI camera features will be available only to iCloud+ subscribers, which starts at $9.99 per month.
During the call, Cook highlighted that Siri AI demonstrates Apple's philosophy: "Building AI that is private and grounded in personal context can change how users find information and get things done with our products in a way that truly enriches their lives." The new assistant can leverage data from apps like Notes and Messages to deliver personalized responses based on the user's schedule, preferences, and information about friends and family.
Although Siri AI has not yet been officially launched, it is available in beta to anyone with relatively recent hardware. Gizmodo previously confirmed that the new version "doesn't disappoint," and Cook stated that Apple is "absolutely thrilled with the response from people who have used Siri AI in developer and public beta versions."
Responding to analyst Michael Ng's question about computational costs, Cook described Apple's infrastructure as a "hybrid model" that relies on both its own data centers and paid cloud services. He acknowledged that this is an area where Apple is investing significantly, raising the question of how these costs will be covered in the long term.
Siri AI represents a significant leap from previous iterations of the assistant, which were mostly used for checking the weather or setting timers. Now, it's a sophisticated system that understands the context of a user's digital life, but it seems that sophistication isn't included in the device's price-it comes as an additional service.
