Croatia yesterday, August 6, 2026, marked Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, Croatian Veterans Day, and the 31st anniversary of the military-police operation Storm. At the ceremony in Knin, attended by the highest state officials, was also the head of Osijek-Baranja County, Nataša Tramišak.

Flag on the fortress and tribute to veterans

At Knin Fortress, twelve representatives of Croatian veterans and victims of the Homeland War raised a twenty-meter Croatian flag. The names of fallen and missing veterans were read, and cadets of the Croatian Army and trainees of the Police Academy paid tribute by forming up.

The program featured the acrobatic group "Wings of Storm" and "Rafale" fighter jets, after which members of the Croatian Army and Police showcased their capabilities and skills.

Historical overview of the operation

Operation "Storm" began on August 4 in the early morning hours with the liberation of Sveti Rok and continued across the wider occupied area. Already on August 5, at exactly noon, the Croatian flag flew over Knin Fortress. During 84 hours, after Knin was liberated, 10,400 square kilometers of Croatian territory were liberated. Nearly 200,000 Croatian soldiers took part in the operation.

"On behalf of Osijek-Baranja County and in my own name, I extend sincere congratulations to all citizens on the occasion of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day. May this great day forever remind us of the price of freedom and the responsibility to build, through joint effort, a prosperous, safe, and successful homeland Croatia and our Osijek-Baranja County," said Prefect Tramišak.

The ceremony was an opportunity to pay tribute to all Croatian veterans, especially those who laid down their lives for the defense of an independent and free Croatia. It was emphasized that Victory Day represents more than a memory of a military victory, as it symbolizes unity, perseverance, and patriotism.
