UEFA Raises Booking Threshold and Overhauls Stadium Clocks

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has introduced two significant rule changes ahead of the new season. The amendments, effective immediately, will apply to all three club competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, and will directly impact Croatian champions Dinamo.
The first and most notable change concerns disciplinary measures. Previously, a player automatically received a one-match suspension after accumulating three yellow cards. From this season, that threshold has been raised to four bookings, giving players a bit more leeway before facing punishment.
This adjustment could prove crucial for clubs competing on multiple fronts, including Dinamo. The Zagreb side has already secured a spot in the Conference League league phase and is one step away from the Champions League playoff after a resounding 5:0 victory over Kauno Žalgiris. In the quest for the elite competition, they face Norwegian side Viking, and the ability to accumulate four yellow cards before suspension could ease the coach's squad selection for demanding European ties.
The second change will be immediately noticeable to fans in the stands. UEFA has abolished the long-standing rule that prevented stadium clocks from displaying time beyond 45 minutes in the first half or 90 minutes for the entire match. From this season, official scoreboards will be able to show the actual match time, including stoppage time.
This practice already exists in some national leagues, such as English football, and will now be implemented across all UEFA club competitions. Spectators at Maksimir will now be able to follow on the scoreboard how much time remains until the end of the half or the match, without having to guess the length of added time.
Both changes take effect from the start of the 2026/27 season for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
