Zagreb police arrested an 84-year-old man suspected of setting a fire in the hallway of a residential building on Baltazara Bogišića Street on Medveščak on Tuesday evening, August 5, 2026. According to the Zagreb Police Department, the retiree used an open flame to ignite accumulated waste, after which the fire spread to a neighbor's apartment.
The incident occurred around 10:30 PM. The flames engulfed various items stored in the stairwell and then spread to the wall of an apartment owned by a 51-year-old woman. Firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The material damage has not yet been assessed.
The 84-year-old suspect was arrested the following day, August 6, and taken to police premises. The criminal investigation is ongoing, and the case is currently classified as endangering life and property by a generally dangerous act or means. Whether criminal charges will be filed against the retiree will be known after the investigation concludes.
