Croatia today marks the 31st anniversary of Operation Storm, a military-police operation, and congratulations have arrived from the Ukrainian Embassy in Zagreb. In a powerful message published on their channels, they highlighted the symbolism of victory and freedom that Operation Storm represents for the Croatian people.

"The flag on Knin Fortress signifies the realization of the centuries-old dream of Croatian generations for a free and whole Republic of Croatia," the statement reads. The message continues: "After the Storm, you will not be the same person as before the Storm, because the Storm brings victory and freedom. The Storm is pride."

Parallel with Ukraine's struggle

Ukrainian diplomats did not miss the opportunity to draw a parallel between Croatia's experience in the 1990s and the current situation in their country. "31 years later, Ukraine, like Croatia then, faces open aggression, irredentism, and historical revisionism from Moscow that denies Ukrainian territorial integrity and national exclusivity," they stated.

The congratulation concluded with a simple and emotional exclamation: "Long live Croatia."

Operation Storm - a key moment in Croatian history

Operation Storm, launched on August 4 and 5, 1995, liberated most of the occupied Croatian territory. The only parts of the country that remained outside the control of the authorities in Zagreb were eastern Croatia, including Vukovar. It was Operation Storm that created the conditions for negotiations that led to the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube region three years later.

Knin Fortress, adorned with Croatian flags, remains the central place of celebration this year, symbolizing the moment when the dream of a free and whole Croatia was realized after centuries.
