Ukrainian forces carried out a series of strikes deep inside Russian territory during the night of August 1-2, 2026, hitting several oil refineries, a military airfield, and storage facilities. According to Stijena.info, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian strikes targeted facilities about 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Among the targets hit, the Engels military airfield in the Saratov region stands out, known as a base for Russian strategic aviation. In addition to the airfield, an oil depot in the Kaluga region and a drone launch site in the Bryansk region were also hit.
Russian authorities reported that eight people were killed in the Ukrainian strikes, claiming that as many as 635 drones were shot down or intercepted during the night. Moscow also claims that a warehouse of Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, was attacked. Wildberries CEO Tatyana Kim addressed the public via video, which drew significant attention in the Russian media space. According to Rybar's analysis, her calm address to customers, acknowledging the issue and briefly outlining steps to resolve it, proved sufficient to avoid panic and create a positive impression among the public.
According to information released by Operatyvne ZSU, Ukrainian pilots hit a total of four oil refineries and one marine terminal between July 30 and August 2. The chronology of the attacks is as follows: on July 30, the Taman marine terminal in the Krasnodar Krai and the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez refinery in the Perm Krai were hit. The following day, July 31, the target was the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery in Volgograd.
On the night of August 2, the Bashneft refinery in Ufa (Bashkortostan) and the Saratov refinery were attacked. UNIAN Ukraine reports that the Omsk refinery, located approximately 2,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, was also hit simultaneously. Unlike the nighttime strikes that Zelensky described as having a range of 600 kilometers, the Omsk refinery represents a separate, geographically much more distant target. The extent of damage at most of these facilities is not yet fully known.
The most detailed information is available regarding the attack on the Taman marine terminal, where, according to Operatyvne ZSU, 12 storage tanks were destroyed. Each of these tanks had a capacity of 5,000 tons, which corresponds to a total volume of as many as 1,000 railway tank cars. The resulting fire covered an area of more than 17,000 square meters.
Moscow simultaneously retaliated with its own strikes. Russian forces attacked two Ukrainian ports and two vessels in the Black Sea during the night, Russian authorities said. On the Ukrainian side, as reported by Stijena.info, it was confirmed that one person was killed in a Russian strike on a postal terminal near Kharkiv.
According to Boris Rozhin (Colonel Cassad), a warehouse of the Ukrainian online retailer Rozetka was also hit during the night, suggesting that the conflict is increasingly spilling over into the commercial infrastructure of both countries.
In recent weeks, both sides have intensified attacks targeting energy facilities, warehouses, and transport infrastructure, while the vast front line remains largely static. Mediation efforts led by the United States have so far yielded no visible progress toward ending the war that has been ongoing since February 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
