Red Cross blood drive in Vranje draws numerous donors of all ages, while the Blood Transfusion Institute warns of reduced summer supplies.
A large number of Vranje residents responded on Thursday, August 7, 2026, to the voluntary blood donation drive organized by the Red Cross of Vranje. Despite the tropical heat, the Gallery of the People's University was filled with people of all age groups, ready to help those most in need.
Both women and men were among the donors, and one woman from Vranje gave blood for the ninth time on this occasion. "I am always ready to respond to the call and help those in need," she told Kurir.rs. One participant emphasized that humanity is most important, describing blood as "the fluid that means life."
Dr. Andrija Stevanović from the Blood Transfusion Institute in Niš pointed out that the summer period traditionally brings a decline in blood supplies, although the current situation is stable. "It's summer, and our supplies are somewhat reduced, but they are stable. We have units of all blood types in stock, just slightly reduced," explained Dr. Stevanović.
The doctor appealed to citizens to join future drives. "I would appeal to people to join our drives so that we can maintain these supplies and avoid problems in supplying hospitals and the Niš Clinical Center," said Dr. Stevanović. He also offered some practical advice for donors during extreme heat.
Dr. Stevanović stressed the importance of preparation before donating blood, especially in conditions of extreme temperatures. "After donating blood, a slightly higher intake of water is recommended, and that is certainly generally advisable due to the heat," he said. In addition to hydration, it is crucial to come well-rested and to have a light breakfast before the drive.
