Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Thursday that he expects a convincing victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections and that he will resign from his position before actively engaging in the election campaign. At the same time, he announced large rallies in Novi Sad and Belgrade, signaling the start of intensive pre-election activities.
Vučić spoke with journalists at the Palace of Serbia after a reception for participants of the camp "Serbia Calls You 2026," where he confirmed that elections could be called "in the coming days or weeks," as reported by Anadolu.
Although the law does not require him to do so, Vučić announced that he will step down from the presidential office to ensure equal conditions for all participants in the election race. "Then I will no longer be an official and will not be able to use state resources, except for minimal security. I think it cannot be fairer than that," Vučić stated.
Until then, he emphasized, he intends to fully perform his duties. "I am not in any official campaign; I will do my job as President of Serbia until the last day of my mandate. I have been touring the country for the past nine and a half years, and I will continue to do so," he said.
Expressing optimism, Vučić said he expects electoral victory not only at the national level but also in key cities. "After all these fascinating polls, I expect victory even in Belgrade, not only at the level of the whole of Serbia where I expect victory with a significant margin, but also in Belgrade, which implies also in Novi Sad," Vučić said, as reported by N1 Serbia. Some recent public opinion polls give the student list an advantage over the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
He noted that in the last six to seven months he has been to Novi Sad "ten to twelve times" and that within less than a month he will hold a large rally in that city. Recall that since the start of protests following the canopy collapse in Novi Sad, Vučić has repeatedly announced a "large rally" of the ruling party, which has not yet taken place. He also announced large rallies in Belgrade. The exact date of the elections, which students and part of the opposition have been demanding for some time, is still unknown.
Commenting on the possible election outcome, Vučić said he will accept the will of the citizens. "I will accept the result if their polls prove accurate and if the opponents defeat us. The final word will be with the citizens," he stated.
He also addressed the possibility of a visit by US President Donald Trump to Serbia, assessing that conditions for it currently do not exist. "Elections will soon be called in Serbia, and the United States will have midterm elections. Only after these processes conclude is it realistic to expect high-level visits between our countries," Vučić explained.
