As temperatures across Croatia show no signs of easing, residents of Vukovar have found the perfect spot to cool off. Their favorite summer destination isn't the sea, but Vukovar Sandbar, a sandy island on the Danube just a few minutes' boat ride from the city center.

Free Transport to the River Oasis

This sandy paradise spans about 32,000 square meters, with its exact size depending on the Danube's water level, which has been exceptionally low these days. The island is accessible via free boats that run daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., shuttling visitors from the city center to the Sandbar and back.

It's this accessibility that makes the Sandbar so popular, with many Vukovar residents spending entire afternoons there. During our visit, we found a large number of swimmers enjoying the sun, swimming, and socializing. Although regular visitors told us the crowds are significantly larger on weekends, there was no shortage of people seeking refreshment even on a weekday.

After a Swim, Affordable Refreshments

The island features a shaded pavilion with food and drink offerings, and there's also a sand volleyball court set up in the shade. We checked the prices, and they're more than reasonable for a relaxed summer hangout.

Beer lovers can choose between a small draft for €2.50 and a large one for €3.20, which is also the price for a half-liter radler. For those preferring non-alcoholic drinks, sodas range from €2.80 to €3.50, while coffee will satisfy with prices between €2 and €2.50. The popular spritzer is available for €2.60. When hunger strikes, there's a pljeskavica (Balkan burger) for €8 and ćevapi for €9.
