Zagreb's Bukovac neighborhood is once again showing its big heart. This year's Humanitarian Futsal Tournament Bukovac 2026, scheduled for September, is entirely dedicated to ten-year-old Fran, a boy living on the autism spectrum. The organizers shared his touching story on Instagram and called on all people of good will to get involved.
Recalling last year's success and incredible atmosphere, the organizers announced the event with an even stronger message. "Our dear Bukovac residents, friends, and people with big hearts... Do you remember last year, that sense of togetherness, the full pitch, and the emotions on the field? Well, it's time to recreate that magic, but this time-with an even bigger heart and an even more important goal," reads their Instagram post. The goal is clear: "Meet Fran-the boy for whom Bukovac's heart will beat this September!"
The organizers described Fran's world and daily struggle in detail. "Fran is a ten-year-old boy whose world may be quieter than ours, but his fight is louder than any stadium. Fran lives on the autism spectrum, in a world that is often confusing and overwhelming. Yet, despite this, Fran is the greatest fighter," they said. They emphasized that the boy doesn't use words to express his feelings, nor can he move independently like his peers, but that "his strength knows no bounds."
Behind every step of Fran's progress lies tireless effort. His "training" isn't on the football pitch; it consists of hours of kinesiotherapy, patient work with special educators, and therapeutic horseback riding that brings him peace. "He is our little fighter who proves every day that hard work pays off. Every day of his is a match. (...) He doesn't give up. He progresses millimeter by millimeter, and each of those millimeters is a championship won for him. Fran is slowly but surely winning his small, yet for us enormous, victories," the organizers wrote.
It is precisely because of these victories that community support is needed. "For these victories to continue growing, he needs our support. Autism is not a barrier to love, and your gift is the wind at his back for a new step, a new skill, and one more smile," they added.
The decision to dedicate this year's tournament to Fran was made with a clear purpose. "We decided to dedicate this year's September tournament to him. We want to ensure the continuity of his therapies and be the wind at his back for every next step he takes," they explained. All those interested in participating are invited to contact them via Instagram.
The organizers also expressed their sincere gratitude at the end. "From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who will take the time, put on a jersey, or simply offer a hand of support. Thank you for understanding that Fran's silence doesn't mean he has nothing to say; with every bit of progress, he tells us: 'thank you'," they concluded.
