The Šibenik-Knin Police Department has completed a criminal investigation against a 43-year-old Slovenian citizen suspected of causing a fire at a gas station in Bilice with a cigarette butt. The incident, which could have had catastrophic consequences, occurred on August 1, 2026.
According to the investigation findings, the 43-year-old threw a cigarette butt into a container with paper, which led to the outbreak of the fire. Ignoring what he had done, he got on his motorcycle and left the gas station as if nothing had happened.
The quick reaction of the gas station workers prevented a potential tragedy. They immediately extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and stopped it from spreading further.
Although he tried to flee, the Slovenian did not get far. Shortly after the incident, the police found and apprehended him. Upon completion of the criminal investigation, conducted by the Šibenik Police Station, the 43-year-old was handed over to the custody supervisor.
A criminal report was filed against the suspect with the competent State Attorney's Office in Šibenik on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of endangering life and property by a generally dangerous act or means.
