Summary
  • On Thursday, August 6, and Friday, August 7, 2026, the roundabout in Kvaternikova Street at Podvežica will be closed due to asphalt works.
  • Exceptions are provided for residents, while all other drivers must use alternative routes.
  • Bus lines 1B, 2, 6, 7, 7A, 25, and 26 will operate on modified routes, and the Podvežica Centar stops will be temporarily discontinued.
  • The investment is estimated at around 250 thousand euros.

Residents of Podvežica and all those traveling through this part of Rijeka can expect serious traffic congestion and changes on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, August 6, 2026, the company Ceste Rijeka d.o.o. will begin asphalt works on the roundabout in Kvaternikova Street, at the intersection with Martina Kontuša Street. The works will continue on Friday, August 7, and the roundabout will be completely closed to all traffic from 7 a.m.

Alternative Routes for Drivers and Exceptions for Residents

Due to the complexity of the intervention, special temporary traffic regulations are in place. From the direction of Martina Kontuša Street, traffic will be allowed only for residents. For other drivers, the use of an alternative route via Tome Strižića, Zdravka Kučića, and Franje Belulovića streets is recommended.

A similar restriction applies from the direction of Brdo Street. Traffic will be allowed only for residents up to Andrije Peruča Street, while movement in the direction Brdo, Kvaternikova Street will be completely prohibited. During the works, vehicles coming from Radnička Street will not be able to turn toward Kvaternikova, except for local residents living in Tihovac Street and the part of Kvaternikova Street before the roundabout. Other drivers are advised to take a detour via Drage Gervaisa Street.

The patrol service will additionally regulate traffic on site, along with the already installed temporary traffic signage. Given that a larger number of workers and construction machinery will be moving in the work zone, the contractors ask all drivers to adjust their speed and exercise increased caution. This project, estimated at around 250 thousand euros, replaces the temporary solution with a permanent and more functional arrangement of the intersection, fully renovating the circular traffic route on the Mihanovićeva Street, Martina Kontuša, Kvaternikova Street, Brdo Street corridor.

Buses Operate on Modified Routes

The works also bring major changes for public transport users. KD Autotrolej has announced that due to the asphalt works on the Podvežica roundabout, from August 6 at 7:00 a.m. until the end of the works, bus lines 1B, 2, 6, 7, 7A, 25, and 26 will operate on modified routes.

  • Line 1B in the direction Centar, Strmica will operate to the Vežica elementary school stop, then continue on a modified route: Kvaternikova, Radnička, Tihovac, Kumičićeva, Tome Strižića, KBC Sušak roundabout. On the return, it operates on its regular route.
  • Line 2 in the direction Trsat, Centar, upon arrival at Podvežica, will use the left lane through the roundabout to the turning point of line 6, where it turns and continues toward Centar on the route of line 6.
  • Lines 7 and 7A in the direction Gornja Vežica/Sv. Križ, Centar, after arriving at the intersection of S. Krautzeka, T. Strižića, and Kumičićeva, will turn onto the temporary route: Kumičićeva, Mihanovićeva, Šetalište Ivana Gorana Kovačića, Bulevard, Centar.
  • Lines 25 and 26 upon arrival at Sv. Buses will follow the alternative route: Ulica dr. Zdravka Kučića, D 404, Tunel Sušak, Jelačićev trg, Delta.

Temporary Removal of Bus Stops

From 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, until the end of the works, the Podvežica Centar bus stops in both directions will be discontinued. Temporary bus stops will be put into operation, located approximately 100 meters before and after the existing locations.

What Happens After the Asphalt Works?

After the completion of the asphalt works on the western lane of the roundabout, most bus lines will return to the temporary routes they used before the start of these works. The exception is line 6, which will permanently change its route. In the direction from Centar to Podvežica, upon arriving at the intersection of Kvaternikova and Kumičićeva, it will continue along Kumičićeva Street to the intersection with S. Krautzeka Street, then along Martina Kontuša Street to the roundabout at Podvežica, and turn right to the Vežica elementary school. A timetable adjustment will also be made on this line.
