The apocalyptic scenes of unprecedented heatwaves, uncontrolled wildfires, and deadly floods that have marked recent months are not just a series of unfortunate coincidences. According to a groundbreaking scientific analysis, they are merely a prelude to what lies ahead as global warming has dramatically accelerated.
The study, published earlier this year in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, shows with 98% statistical certainty that warming has significantly intensified over the past decade. This is the first time researchers have asserted with statistical confidence that the pace of global warming is accelerating.
Since 2015, the Earth's temperature has been rising at an estimated rate of 0.35 degrees Celsius per decade. In comparison, from 1970 to 2015, that rate was only 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. This is an increase that approaches double the rate of the previous 45 years.
"If the warming rate from the last 10 years continues, it would lead to a long-term exceedance of the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit from the Paris Agreement before 2030. How quickly the Earth will continue to warm ultimately depends on how quickly we reduce global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels to zero," said lead author Stefan Rahmstorf, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
Scientists have debated for years whether the pace of warming has truly increased, due to challenges in distinguishing short-term natural fluctuations from the long-term trend caused by human activity. Natural variability has already led to erroneous conclusions, such as after the strong El Niño in 1998 when some claimed that global warming had slowed or even stopped.
Rahmstorf and Grant Foster, a retired statistician who previously worked at Tempo Analytics, joined forces to provide a definitive answer. They conducted a detailed statistical analysis of observational data, filtering out the influence of El Niño, volcanic activity, and solar variations. "We filter out known natural influences in the observational data, so the 'noise' is reduced, making the underlying long-term warming signal more clearly visible," Foster explained.
The findings are alarming. All temperature records are already close to the 1.5 degrees Celsius warming level above pre-industrial values and are on track to exceed that threshold before 2030. To officially breach the Paris Agreement, the global temperature would need to exceed that limit on average over 20 years, and we are precisely on that path, the researchers warn.
A long-term exceedance could trigger multiple climate tipping points, including the collapse of major ocean circulation systems, sudden thawing of boreal permafrost, and the collapse of tropical coral reefs. These changes could have irreversible and dangerous consequences for humanity, along with a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, heavy rainfall, and floods.
"Stopping this trend is in our hands. Studies show that global warming will stop roughly when humanity reaches net-zero CO2 emissions, but it can hardly be reversed," Foster and Rahmstorf stated.
However, the authors acknowledge that in the current political climate, it is entirely possible that the current pace of warming will continue or even further accelerate. Without decisive action from the world's largest polluters, including the United States, we could be living in a completely different climate within just a few years.
