Sixteen-year-old Kristina Ljutova sensationally won the WTA tournament in Memphis in her first Tour appearance. Ranked 229th in the world, she came from behind to defeat Czech player Darja Vidmanov, seven years her senior, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final, as reported by Sportske novosti.
The final match on August 2, 2026, started poorly for the young tennis player. Vidmanov, ranked 114th on the WTA list, convincingly took the first set 6-1. It seemed that Ljutova, who had come through qualifying and four rounds of the main draw, had run out of steam.
However, she showed exceptional character in the remainder of the match. In the second set, she completely turned the tide, replying with an identical 6-1 scoreline. She continued her excellent play in the deciding set, clinching her first title at the first attempt with a 6-3 win.
With this victory, Ljutova became the first player since 2023 to win a title in her WTA debut. That year, Maria Timofeeva achieved the feat in Budapest. Additionally, Ljutova is the first player born in the 2010s to claim a WTA title.
For the 23-year-old Vidmanov, this was her first appearance in a WTA Tour final, but she will have to wait longer for her first trophy. According to estimates by Sportske novosti, Ljutova is set to jump about a hundred places in the world rankings from her current 229th position.
While the young sensation celebrated in Memphis, elsewhere in North America weather conditions caused serious problems. The Washington Open final between Filipino player Alex Eala and world No. 3 American Jessica Pegula was delayed by more than three hours due to rain and lightning, as reported by Inquirer.
The match finally got underway around 3 a.m. Manila time. Pegula won the first set 6-4, and play was suspended with Eala leading 2-1 in the second set, according to Channel News Asia. Organizers had earlier posted on X urging everyone present to seek shelter immediately.
There were also issues in Canada. The evening session of the men's Canadian Open in Montreal was completely canceled, while in Toronto, play was interrupted on the Grandstand court during the match between Poland's Magdalena Frech and France's Leolia Jeanjean. "The session on the evening of August 2 has been canceled. Our ticketing team will contact ticket holders shortly to present available options," organizers of the Montreal tournament announced.
