1,742 Fines: Dubrovnik Police Release Alarming Statistics

Traffic police in the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department had an exceptionally busy week over the past seven days. The result of regular and intensified checks is a total of 1,742 repressive measures taken against drivers who violated traffic regulations, as announced on Monday, August 17, 2026.

During this period, a total of 20 traffic accidents were recorded, with 11 involving injuries. The total number of casualties shows that eight people sustained serious and 13 sustained minor injuries. The remaining nine accidents resulted only in material damage.

The 'Big Four' Traffic Killers

Special focus was placed on the so-called "big four traffic killers," violations that most often lead to the most severe consequences. By far the largest number of fines, 755, were issued for inappropriate and excessive speed.

In addition to speeding, police also sanctioned 98 individuals who were not wearing seat belts. 41 drivers were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 63 individuals for dangerous use of mobile phones while driving.

Driving Without a License and Refusing Tests

Other serious violations were also recorded. Five drivers refused drug testing, which is itself an offense, and seven individuals were caught behind the wheel without having passed their driving test.

The statistics are rounded out by 163 sanctions for improper overtaking and 188 violations for improper stopping and parking. Particularly notable is the fact that ten drivers parked in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities.

Police Appeal

The Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department warns that the period of increased traffic is not yet over and calls on all road users to exercise caution.

"We still have a period of increased traffic ahead of us, so the police appeal to all participants to adjust their speed to road conditions and, through responsible driving, protect their own lives and the lives of others," reads the statement from the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department.
