In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, July 29, 2026, around 1:45 AM, a fire broke out in Zagreb's Trešnjevka neighborhood after a 22-year-old man set fire to doormats in front of an apartment belonging to a family member, media reported citing the Zagreb Police Department.
According to a police report carried by 01Portal and other media, the suspect came to Štefanićeva Street to an apartment where a 56-year-old man, the apartment owner, and two other household members were present at the time. In order to get inside, he first damaged a window, then began banging on the front door. When no one opened, he set fire to the doormats placed in front of the door.
There are discrepancies in media reports regarding the identity of the two younger household members. While Večernji list, 01Portal, and Stijena.info state they were a 21-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, Jutarnji list writes about two men, and Telegram about two women aged 21 and 24.
The fire quickly spread from the doormats to the apartment's front door and to two bicycles belonging to the 56-year-old. Police officers soon arrived at the scene and, according to the report, found and arrested the 22-year-old, then extinguished the fire. During extinguishing, two police officers suffered minor injuries and were given medical assistance in official premises.
"Based on the received report, police officers arrived at the scene, found and arrested the 22-year-old. The arrested man was taken to official premises for criminal investigation. An investigation is to follow," the Zagreb Police Department stated.
The suspect is currently in custody, and the police continue to determine all the circumstances of the incident. It is not known why the young man was not let into the apartment, and the material damage has not yet been assessed.
