The County Court in Osijek has ordered pretrial detention for a 25-year-old Croatian citizen charged with attempted murder. On August 7, 2026, in a park in the Osijek-Baranja County, the suspect attacked a 72-year-old retiree with a knife without any provocation.
According to the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia (DORH), the young man, born in 2001, approached the victim and, with the intent to kill, inflicted multiple life-threatening stab wounds. All wounds were in the abdominal area.
DORH told Osijek Express that there is reasonable suspicion that the defendant "approached the victim (born 1954) without provocation and, intending to kill her, inflicted multiple life-threatening stab wounds to the abdomen with a knife, and only due to timely medical assistance did death not occur."
The County State Attorney's Office in Osijek issued a decision to conduct an investigation against the suspect for the criminal offense of attempted murder under Article 110 of the Criminal Code. The prosecution then proposed pretrial detention to the investigating judge, citing the risk of reoffending as the primary reason.
The investigating judge of the County Court in Osijek accepted this proposal, and the young man was remanded in custody.
