Atlassian Williams F1 has officially confirmed that Alex Albon will drive for the British team in the 2027 season as well. The news was announced on August 18, 2026, and the continued collaboration marks a mutual commitment to the long-term project of returning Williams to the winning ways of Formula 1.
Albon joined Williams in 2022, after losing his seat at Red Bull at the end of 2020. Since then, he has become a key figure in the transformation of the Grove-based team. Last season (2025), he scored 73 points and finished eighth in the drivers' standings, marking Williams' most successful season since 2016.
During his time at Williams, the 30-year-old Thai driver has etched his name into the team's history. At the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, he made his 96th start for Williams, surpassing Nigel Mansell's previous record. Four races later, at the Hungaroring, he celebrated his 100th appearance in a Williams car.
The continued partnership comes ahead of 2027, when the team celebrates its 50th anniversary. Albon will spend his sixth season with Williams, a rarity in modern Formula 1.
The current 2026 season has been challenging for Williams. The team currently sits ninth in the constructors' standings with 11 races completed before the summer break, while Albon holds 16th place in the drivers' standings with five points scored. He scored points in Miami and Monaco, but in the last five races before the break, he only made it past Q1 once.
Despite this, Albon emphasized the importance of collective effort in the long-term project in a statement:
"Since I joined the Atlassian Williams F1 team in 2022, the transformation this team has undergone is hard to put into words. One tough year doesn't tell the full story and only gives me extra motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things. Our story is not finished yet, so my full focus is now on doing everything it takes to get us back to the top of the standings."
Team principal James Vowles, who joined Williams in 2023 with the goal of transformation through new regulations, did not hide his delight at keeping a key driver:
"I'm thrilled that Alex and the Atlassian Williams F1 team are continuing our incredible journey together. Alex has been a leader of this transformation project from day one, and we have plenty of unfinished business that we are determined to see through. Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the massive improvements we've made in recent years, re-signing him shows the faith we both have in the direction we're heading."
According to BBC Sport analysis, Albon's decision partly reflects a lack of compelling alternatives on the grid. The top four teams had no available seats for him, leaving him with options only in the midfield. In that context, Albon chose to trust the changes Vowles has made after this year's difficulties.
Williams plans to bring an upgrade package to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and the team hopes for a stronger second half of the season.
The one-year contract gives Albon flexibility if 2027 doesn't bring the expected breakthrough, but it also gives Williams stability ahead of the anniversary season. The first race after the summer break is the Dutch Grand Prix.
