The massive fire that broke out on Wednesday around 3:40 PM on inaccessible terrain above Žager in Herceg Novi is still not under control. During the night, the fire spread towards houses and a church in Bijeli Bašići, leaving residents without electricity and water. Ana Sević, a TV host currently on vacation in Montenegro, took to Instagram to share a photo of the hillside in flames with a brief prayer: "Oh Lord, help us."
According to information provided to Kurir TV by Sabrija Vulić, editor-in-chief of RTV Budva, the situation at the large fire site above Bijela and Bašići near Herceg Novi is considerably more stable this morning. However, authorities warn that conditions could change due to the wind, which is currently weaker than last night.
At one point, the fire threatened around 50 houses, but all structures have been defended so far. Zlatko Ćirović, commander of the Herceg Novi Protection and Rescue Service, said last night that all buildings are safe and that residents have been provided with preventive accommodation in hotels in Herceg Novi, as well as food. Miodrag Bešović from the Directorate for Protection and Rescue of Montenegro's Ministry of Interior confirmed that residents' lives were not endangered and that all threatened structures were defended.
Yesterday, three aircraft participated in extinguishing the fire, dropping a total of 128 tons of water, while helicopters from the Ministry of Interior and the Army of Montenegro were deployed this morning. The biggest challenge is the inaccessible terrain, and strong winds further accelerated the spread of the fire.
Tourist Marina Pavlović described last night's panic in Baošići for N1 Serbia: "Last night was alarming - we were all scared, especially the children; people were fleeing with suitcases. Most went to Meljine, Herceg Novi, and Portonovi, but many stayed, keeping their composure, of course, for the kids." She added that the biggest problem is the wind, which blows unpredictably, and that in Baošići they had power outages that continued even today.
In addition to the fire near Herceg Novi, several smaller fires are active in Montenegro. Firefighting units are currently deployed in Panikovići, near Nikšić, and in part of Mrkojevići near Bar, while a fire on Mount Lisinja remains active. The blaze in Doljani, Podgorica, is no longer a threat, as the Protection and Rescue Service of the capital and helicopters from the Army of Montenegro successfully extinguished it together. Authorities are appealing to residents and tourists to be especially cautious and responsible during the summer season to prevent new fires from breaking out.
Numerous celebrities own property in this part of Montenegro, including Miloš Bojanić, who has a hotel there. TV host Ana Sević is safe, and her Instagram post quickly drew attention from her followers.
