The 2026 Formula 1 season has reached its equator and the traditional summer break, which includes a mandatory two-week factory shutdown. This is an ideal moment to reflect on the championship so far, and F1 experts Lawrence Barretto, Chris Medland, James Hinchcliffe, and David Tremayne have shared their thoughts and bold predictions for the second half of the year, as reported by the official Formula 1 website.

Hamilton's Triumph in Barcelona Highlights the First Half

As the best race of the season so far, analysts almost unanimously highlight the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. There, Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, secured his first victory for Ferrari. "It was a stunning race. It had tension, uncertainty, and brilliant strategy from the Italian team, along with top-notch pace from the seven-time world champion," said F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto.

Special contributor Chris Medland adds that Barcelona even overshadowed the exciting Sprint race in Canada: "The decision came down to Barcelona because it was the first time Mercedes was beaten on a Sunday, and Hamilton's first win for Ferrari was a huge moment." Former IndyCar winner James Hinchcliffe highlighted its historical significance: "Seeing Lewis return to the top step of the podium, for the first time in red, was such a historic moment."

Antonelli Shines in the First Half, Verstappen and Hamilton Follow

When it comes to the best drivers, everyone agrees that young Kimi Antonelli, who leads the standings in his second F1 season, has been outstanding. Alongside Antonelli, the experts also highlight the resurgence of 41-year-old Lewis Hamilton in his second year at Ferrari, as well as Max Verstappen, who, in Hinchcliffe's words, "consistently extracts more from the car than it often deserves on the grid." The third spot among the best often went to Isack Hadjar, who consistently scores points and "handles the pressure of racing in the second Red Bull car brilliantly."

Lawson, Hadjar, and Perez, The Silent Heroes of the Season

Flying under the radar but with excellent performances, Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls has particularly stood out. The New Zealander has scored points in six of the last seven races, moved ahead of Pierre Gasly in the standings in Hungary, and has nearly double the points of his teammate Arvid Lindblad. He currently holds ninth place in the drivers' standings. "Lawson just seems to always find a way to maximize his result," Medland noted.

Hinchcliffe offered an interesting perspective, naming Sergio Perez at the new Cadillac team as the most underrated driver. Perez took a break after his contract was terminated, and his value rose during his year away. "Jumping into a brand-new project was a monumental task. Title Predictions: Antonelli Without Real Competition?

As for the eventual champion, opinions are almost unanimous. "It's hard to see anyone stopping his charge toward a first world title," Barretto stated categorically. Hinchcliffe adds that all doubts about Antonelli's ability to handle pressure have vanished, while David Tremayne, an F1 journalist from the Hall of Fame, concludes: "I don't see anyone else pulling off the kind of miraculous comeback that Max and Red Bull managed last year."
