Apple on Monday, August 17, 2026, released iOS 26.6.1, along with iPadOS 26.6.1 and macOS 26.6.2, delivering patches for 29 security vulnerabilities. Although none of the flaws have been exploited in real-world attacks so far, experts advise updating promptly as details about the vulnerabilities are now publicly available.
According to ZDNet, the update addresses issues that could lead to device compromise or unexpected system crashes. One of the patched flaws affects an audio component and could allow the leakage of sensitive information, while three vulnerabilities impact the operating system kernel itself, where a remote attacker or malicious application could disrupt system operation or corrupt memory.
The majority of the vulnerabilities are in WebKit, Apple's browser engine that powers Safari and other browsers on iOS devices. According to Apple's release notes, malicious web content could cause Safari to crash or lead to memory corruption. CNET confirms that the update includes more than 20 fixes and security patches, with most of them addressing WebKit and the kernel.
An interesting detail of this update is the attribution of nine vulnerabilities to Codex Security, a tool developed by OpenAI. This AI tool helps companies identify and address security vulnerabilities. Apple and Microsoft are increasingly relying on AI models to find bugs in code, resulting in more frequent security updates.
ZDNet notes that its parent company, Ziff Davis, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, alleging that the company violated copyright laws when training its AI systems.
iOS 27 is expected to be unveiled next month, making this potentially the last update in the iOS 26 series. Apple has intensified its efforts against security flaws in recent months: at the end of July, iOS 26.6 was released with as many as 91 patches, while at the end of June, iOS 25.2 brought 29 fixes.
For Croatian iPhone and iPad users, the update is available through the device settings: simply open Settings, select General, then Software Update, and start the download. On Mac computers, the process is the same through System Settings.
