The former Liverpool manager has ended talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association, explaining that at this stage of his career, he prioritizes club football. He has not permanently closed the door on the national team.
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has officially confirmed that he has withdrawn from the process to select a new head coach for the Dutch national team. Although he was considered the leading candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman, the 47-year-old tactician has decided that now is not the right time to make the move to the international stage.
In a statement to Voetbal International, Slot explained that his decision has nothing to do with financial terms or contract length. "At this stage of my career, I want to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that simply isn't possible in the same way with a national team," he said. "And that's why I decided not to continue the talks and not to enter into negotiations about what a potential contract might look like."
He specifically denied media speculation that had intensified in recent days. "Over the past few weeks, and especially the last few days, various reports have emerged about the vacant position with the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, which included discussions about salary and contract duration. Those speculations are incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of negotiations," Slot said. He also stressed that talks with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) never reached the point where the content of a contract would have been discussed. "Communication with the association was professional and courteous," he added, dismissing media speculation about an alleged dispute.
Slot arrived at Liverpool after winning the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord in 2023. In his first season at Anfield, he led the club to their 20th English league title, but the following season saw a drop to fifth place in the Premier League. Following an internal review and public criticism from Mohamed Salah, the club dismissed him on May 30, 2026.
His initial contract with Liverpool was highly lucrative, with the total package estimated at around £25 million. Had he accepted the national team job, Liverpool would have significantly reduced their severance costs. Slot had already turned down an offer from Fulham to take charge at Craven Cottage, demonstrating that he is very selective in choosing his next role.
Although he has now turned down the job, Slot has not permanently closed the door on the Dutch national team. "It would be a great honor to one day represent my country as head coach. However, this was not the right moment for me," he said. He believes that club football can still offer him numerous challenges and wants to return to a role where he can work with players on a daily basis and build a playing system over the long term.
The Netherlands are without a head coach after Ronald Koeman stepped down following a disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup, where the team was eliminated by Morocco in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout. With Slot out of the running, Dutch media have mentioned former Portugal boss Roberto Martínez as a serious candidate, who is reportedly already in talks with the association. According to reports, KNVB representatives are currently negotiating with the 53-year-old Spanish tactician, who resigned as Portugal's head coach after their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
Slot's decision means he avoids the trend of elite coaches moving into international football. His predecessor at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, recently took charge of Germany, Thomas Tuchel is at the helm of England, Carlo Ancelotti leads Brazil, and Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the French national team.
