Arsenal have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of defender Ezri Konsa, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The fee has been agreed at £50 million plus add-ons, with the 28-year-old Englishman set to strengthen the London club's back line.
According to a report from The Athletic, as relayed by Goal.com, Arsenal see Konsa as the ideal solution for their defense. William Saliba is struggling with a back injury and his return is not expected anytime soon, while Jurriën Timber is also not yet ready. As a result, the reigning English champions have decided to act in the transfer market.
Goal.com notes that Konsa's Transfermarkt value is estimated at €45 million, and his contract with Aston Villa runs until mid-2028. Aston Villa, for their part, were holding out for more than Arsenal's initial offer, but the gap in expectations is expected to be closed in the coming days.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have been tracking Konsa throughout the summer and have finally made a breakthrough in negotiations. Mikel Arteta believes Konsa can successfully cover for Saliba's absence in the center of defense. The French center-back's return remains uncertain, but he is not expected back before mid-October after sustaining a back injury in the World Cup semi-final against Spain. Konsa's versatility adds further value, as Timber is battling a groin injury that has plagued him for months, and Konsa can also play at right-back.
Konsa was England's starting center-back at last summer's World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He was only left out of the starting lineup for the semi-final against Argentina, which England lost 1-2.
He began his career at Charlton Athletic, from where he moved to Brentford, and in 2019 Aston Villa brought him in for €13 million. In addition to center-back, he can also play at right-back, which further increases his value to Arsenal.
Konsa has played 286 matches for Aston Villa and was a key part of the team that won the Europa League last season under Unai Emery. Arteta believes the partnership of Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães is the best in England, but he is confident that the arrival of a player of Konsa's caliber will send a clear message about Arsenal's ambition to continue dominating after last season's title. Arsenal played 63 matches in all competitions last season, including the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals, so Arteta expects Konsa to get plenty of minutes, especially given the injuries. The Arsenal manager wants more quality options to better rotate the squad.
Arsenal open the new season on Friday evening at home against Coventry. Meanwhile, Aston Villa are preparing for a new bid from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal for striker Ollie Watkins, after rejecting an offer of nearly £40 million. If Villa sell Watkins, Emery would like to bring in Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, but Chelsea's £65 million valuation is seen as an obstacle to any deal.
