Summary
  • Customs officers at the Županja Bridge crossing stopped a BiH citizen on Monday with over €38,000 in undeclared cash.
  • The money was in euros, Swiss francs, and US dollars, hidden in envelopes and a wallet.
  • The traveler was fined approximately €11,500 for violating the obligation to declare amounts exceeding €10,000.

On Monday, August 4, 2026, customs officials at the Županja Bridge border crossing prevented an attempt to illegally bring a large amount of cash into the European Union. A vehicle with Austrian license plates, driven by a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was subjected to a thorough inspection.

During the examination of personal luggage and a wallet, customs officers discovered undeclared cash. The total amounted to €36,745, 600 Swiss francs, and 1,000 US dollars, distributed across several envelopes. According to estimates, the total value of the seized cash exceeds €38,000.

Hefty Fine for Undeclared Money

Due to the violation of regulations, the traveler was issued a misdemeanor fine on the spot. Although sources do not fully agree on the exact amount, it is undisputed that the fine is exceptionally high. According to Klix.ba, he was fined €11,490, while Dnevnik.hr mentions an amount of €11,500.

This case prompted the Croatian Customs Administration to once again remind all travelers of their declaration obligation. Any individual crossing the EU's external border, whether entering or leaving, must declare cash if its value reaches €10,000 or more. This also applies to the equivalent amount in any other foreign currency.

The declaration must be submitted to the competent customs service or border police, either in writing or electronically, using the prescribed form. Failure to comply with this rule is treated as a misdemeanor and can result in serious financial consequences, as this incident clearly demonstrated.
