Belčić's Fiery Baptism in Birmingham: 32nd Place on Debut

Karlovac athlete Bruno Belčić made his senior European Championship debut in Birmingham, finishing 32nd out of 34 competitors in the 3000m steeplechase qualifying heat. His time was 9:00.76, which was only enough for second-to-last place in his qualifying heat, reports Kaportal.

Tactical Races and Lack of Experience

Both semifinal heats were highly tactical and slow for long stretches, forcing all athletes to adopt the imposed pace. Belčić, as the least experienced participant in the championship, ran out of steam in the final stretch and posted a relatively modest result compared to his potential.

Radio Mrežnica reports that Belčić finished 16th (second-to-last) in his qualifying heat, with the 17th competitor failing to finish the race. 16 runners advanced to the final, with the top eight from each heat qualifying.

First Karlovac Athlete in 36 Years

With this appearance, Belčić became the first athlete from Karlovac in 36 years to compete at a senior European Championship. The last to do so was Nedeljko Višnjić, who ran the 110m hurdles at the 1990 European Championship in Split.

Although he failed to run the required time at the Croatian Individual Championship, Belčić was later added to the national team roster. Recently, at a meeting in Oordegem, Belgium, he once again broke the Croatian record in the 3000m steeplechase, which now stands at 8:34.33.

Ruppert the Main Favorite for Gold

The biggest favorite for the European gold in this event is Germany's Frederik Ruppert, ranked first in Europe, who has run an impressive 7:57.80 this season. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 9:50 PM.

For Belčić, this was his first experience at the senior international level, and his next opportunity could be the European Championship in Chorzów, Poland, in two years, where with more experience he could show more, concludes Kaportal.
