Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign 27-year-old Uruguayan center-back Ronald Araújo from Barcelona on loan, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday evening. The news was confirmed with his signature phrase "here we go," signaling that the deal is practically done.
According to Romano, the English and Spanish giants have reached a verbal agreement, and the entire transfer has been approved by Barcelona's sporting director Deco. Unless there is an unexpected twist in the final stages, Araújo will continue his career at Anfield.
The deal is surprising given that Araújo extended his commitment to the Catalan club until the summer of 2031 as recently as early 2025. Despite this, the 191-centimeter-tall Uruguayan international will now, at least temporarily, leave Barcelona and move to the Premier League.
Araújo joined Barcelona in 2018 from Boston River, a club in Uruguay. He initially played for the reserve team and made his debut for the first team in October 2019. Since the 2020/21 campaign, he has been a regular in the starting lineup. Although his primary role is center-back, he can also play at right-back, and his strongest attributes are physical strength, speed, and jumping ability.
With Barcelona, he has won three Spanish league titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and three Spanish Super Cups. Last season, he scored four goals, matching his best single-season tally for the Catalan club.
