The legendary midfielder returns to the Catalan club as an assistant to Julian Belletti in the second team, where he will gain his first coaching experience.
Sergio Busquets, one of the most decorated players in Barcelona's history, is embarking on a new professional chapter. As of Monday, he is officially part of the coaching staff of Barça Atlètic, the Catalan giants' second team, where he will serve as an assistant coach. The news was first reported by Fabrizio Romano and later confirmed by Tportal.
Busquets will work closely with Julian Belletti, the head coach of Barça Atlètic, with whom he shared the first-team dressing room during his playing days. Alongside his regular coaching duties, he will also be taking a coaching course to obtain the necessary licenses to manage a team independently. The club decided to bring him in precisely because of the vast experience and football knowledge he can pass on to young developing players.
His return to Barcelona comes three years after he concluded his playing spell at the club. He spent 15 seasons in the first team before continuing his career at Inter Miami, where he played for two and a half years before announcing his retirement from professional football.
Busquets came through La Masia and made his first-team debut in the 2008/09 season, quickly establishing himself as an indispensable member of the midfield. In a Barcelona shirt, he made 722 official appearances, placing him third on the club's all-time list. During that period, he won 32 trophies, including nine Spanish league titles and three Champions League titles.
He also achieved great success with the Spanish national team. He was a key part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2010 and, two years later, the European Championship in 2012.
Busquets begins this new phase of his career where he built his footballing name. He will take his first step toward a potential head coaching role by working with Barcelona's young players, supported by his former teammate Belletti.
