Barcelona has agreed to bring João Cancelo back ahead of the new La Liga season. The Portuguese player has terminated his contract with Saudi club Al Hilal and will join the Catalan club as a free agent, as reported on Sunday, August 16, 2026, by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, and relayed by Sportklub.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick wanted the Portuguese international for the new season, and according to Romano, Cancelo had already agreed to all terms with Barcelona back in June 2026. Now, only the formalization of the transfer remains.
Romano posted on X that Barcelona plans to bring Cancelo to the city early next week, with Al Hilal giving the green light for his exit. "It had to be and it will be next week: João Cancelo will fly to Barcelona within 48h," Romano wrote in a post also shared on his official Telegram channel.
Cancelo was already in Catalonia during the 2023/2024 season, when he was on loan from Manchester City. Last season, according to data cited by Sportklub, he played 16 matches, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Goal.com reports that Cancelo has successfully ended his stint with Al Hilal, giving Barcelona an unexpected boost in their pursuit of a third consecutive Spanish league title.
Excitement over the Portuguese's return is already spreading on social media. "Más culé que el escudo" (More Barça than the crest itself), reads one comment on Romano's post. Others highlight that sporting director Deco is "really cooking" and that Cancelo is better than both Balde and Koundé, Barcelona's two regular defenders.
