Alarming data on casualties on Istrian roads have prompted the police to take decisive action. In the first seven months of this year, four motorcyclists lost their lives, and more than 180 traffic accidents involving them and electric scooter riders were recorded. Therefore, the Istrian Police Department will conduct a major traffic operation on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 3 PM to 8 PM, targeting these categories of road users.
According to data released by the police, there were 127 traffic accidents involving motorcycle and moped riders in the Istria region. The consequences are tragic: four people were killed, 16 sustained serious injuries, and as many as 101 people suffered minor injuries.
The statistics for electric scooter riders are equally discouraging. This year, they have been involved in 54 traffic accidents. In these incidents, six riders were seriously injured, and 34 sustained minor injuries.
The police note that the causes of accidents are not solely on the side of motorcyclists. A common cause of tragedies is other drivers failing to yield the right of way, which, combined with inappropriate or excessive speed, often leads to very severe outcomes.
During Saturday's operation, which will be carried out across the entire Istrian County, police officers will focus on several key points. Checks will include the use of protective helmets, vehicle technical compliance, speed, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Special attention will also be paid to improper overtaking, compliance with other traffic regulations, and the correct use of electric scooters.
The police have once again highlighted the key rules for electric scooter riders. Only persons over the age of 14 are allowed to operate them, and wearing a protective helmet is mandatory. Only one person may ride a scooter at a time, and bicycle lanes and paths have priority.
The Istrian Police Department has called on all road users to behave responsibly and has specifically appealed to parents to encourage children and young people to participate safely in traffic, in order to prevent further tragedies on Istrian roads.
