Following the severe collision between a passenger and freight train that occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, on the Sveti Ivan Žabno, Gradec line, workers spent the entire night clearing the aftermath of the accident. HŽ Infrastruktura has reported that the removal of both trains should be completed during the day, and the line could reopen on Monday.
According to a spokesperson for HŽ Infrastruktura, all freight cars have already been removed. The locomotive of the freight train and the electric battery-powered passenger train remain at the scene, and their removal requires the arrival of experts from Končar due to the special battery system. Based on current findings, the track has not sustained major damage, only a few sleepers will need to be replaced and necessary works carried out.

The collision occurred on Saturday around 10 a.m. near Škrinjari. According to data from the Koprivnica-Križevci police, the passenger train, traveling from Gradec toward Sveti Ivan Žabno, was operated by a 61-year-old driver. The freight train, coming from the opposite direction, was operated by a 20-year-old driver.
A total of 25 people were injured in the accident, including both drivers and a 43-year-old conductor. All injured individuals have been treated at medical facilities, and the exact classification of injuries will be known after medical documentation is received.
The on-site investigation was led by the deputy of the Municipal State Attorney's Office in Bjelovar, with expert assistance from police officers and other relevant services. The cause of the collision is currently unknown, and the circumstances of this railway accident are being determined through an investigation.
