Marin Čilić successfully stepped into a new week on the ATP Tour. In the first round of the Masters in Montreal, the Croatian tennis player defeated the tenacious Japanese player Shimabukuro after an hour and a half of play, advancing to the second round.
The first set was marked by solid serves from both sides, so the decision was not reached until the tie-break. The second set painted a completely different picture, with Čilić dominating entirely. He broke the Japanese player's serve three times, first for a 2-1 lead, then for 4-1, and finally for a convincing 6-1.
Although Shimabukuro served six aces, double Čilić's two, the key difference lay in unforced errors. The Japanese player accumulated 33, while the Croatian was significantly more precise with 18 errors. Čilić's dominance was particularly evident on his first serve, where he won as much as 80 percent of points, while Shimabukura won 70 percent on his first serve. Additionally, Čilić did not lose his serve once during the entire match.
This was the first head-to-head meeting between Čilić and Shimabukura, and in the second round, the Croatian faces a much more familiar name. To advance to the third round, he will compete against the 15th seed, American Frances Tiafoe. Čilić has a perfect record against him, having won both of their previous encounters.
At the same tournament in Montreal, with a prize fund of $9,415,724, Serbian tennis player Miomir Kecmanović played a dramatic match. After nearly three hours of battle, he defeated American Michael Zhang 6:4, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5). The match began on Sunday evening but was interrupted by rain at 1-1 in sets. Upon returning to the court, the decision came in the third set, where Kecmanović showed more composure in the tie-break and won 7-5. In the second round, he faces Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who leads their head-to-head record 2-1.
